Amadou Toumani Toure, former Mali President, has been confirmed dead.

This was made known by his Chief of Staff, Seydou Cissouma. The chief refused to disclose any information on the cause of his death.

However, a hospital doctor in Bamako revealed that Toure had recently undergone heart surgery.

The Former Mali President died in Turkey on Monday night at age 72.

The former army general led the nation for a decade before being overturned in 2012 by a military coup. He was acclaimed for enacting democratic reforms in the nation, but was overthrown in a military coup in 2012.

Toure seized power in the year 1991 from Moussa Toure, a dictator after 22 years of rulership. He led the installation of democracy the following year and handed over power to a civilian president which gave him the nickname ‘Soldier of Democracy.’

He later became president in 2002 and 2007 but was overthrown as he was accused of refusing to support the soldier’s battle against both Tuareg rebels and jihadist insurgents.
