Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer, has been released from the correctional center in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, after meeting his bail conditions. The Federal High Court and the Ekiti State Magistrate Court granted Farotimi’s bail application, paving the way for his release on Tuesday.Farotimi’s legal team confirmed that he has fulfilled the bail conditions, which include a ₦30 million bond, two sureties, and the surrender of his international passport. One of the sureties must be a resident of Ekiti with a landed property within the magisterial district.The lawyer was remanded in custody over allegations of defamation stemming from his book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Judicial System.” In the book, Farotimi accused renowned lawyer and elder statesman, Afe Babalola (SAN) of bribery and corruption within the judiciary.Chief Magistrate Adebayo Adeosun granted Farotimi bail, stating that the activist could no longer remain in custody. The court also prohibited Farotimi from granting interviews to the media.The case has been adjourned to February 13, 2025, for the commencement of the hearing. Farotimi is expected to reunite with his family in Lagos, following his release.
