The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has outlined its conditions for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills, currently under review in the National Assembly. Led by Chairman and former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the LND emphasized the need to address concerns raised by a technical committee evaluating the bills on Thursday in Abuja.

Shekarau highlighted the importance of considering socio-cultural and governance issues that could have severe consequences if overlooked. The LND views the proposed tax reform bills as an opportunity to foster economic stability while tackling broader national challenges.

The conditions for support come amid controversy surrounding the tax reform bills, which have been met with opposition from northern governors and lawmakers. The governors have expressed concerns that the bills would disadvantage northern states and widen the economic gap between the north and south.

The tax reform bills, which include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024 and the Tax Administration Bill, aim to provide a fiscal foundation for taxation in Nigeria and establish a clear legal framework for tax administration. However, critics argue that the bills would benefit only Lagos State and disadvantage other regions.

“The LND views the proposed tax reform bills as an opportunity to advance Nigeria’s economic stability while addressing constitutional, socio-cultural, and governance concerns,” Shekarau stated.

“We urge comprehensive amendments to ensure inclusivity, national cohesion, and equitable resource distribution.”

The House of Representatives has halted discussion on the tax reform bills indefinitely, following pressure from northern governors and lawmakers. The Senate has also passed the bills for a second reading, despite opposition from northern senators.
