President Muhammadu Buhari has advised Nigerians to pay more attention to the relationship between the state and the local government, while squashing the continuous clamor by some Nigerians to create state police.
The President made this known in an interview with channels television.
He reacted to this amid continuous calls by citizens to create state police in order to tackle the insecurity ravaging the country.
“State police is not an option. Find out the relationship between local government and the Governors. Are the third tier of government getting what they are supposed to get constitutionally? Are they getting it? Let the people in local government tell you the truth, the fight is between local governments and the Governor.”
Buhari further emphasized on the roles of the traditional rulers in the society. Adding that they know each person by family and sometimes individually.
Recall that Mr. President had always rejected state policing as the wayforward to tackle Nigeria’s insecurity.
Buhari had in 2019 noted that the state governors may likely not be able to pay state officers if eventually introduced.
There has been increase in the call for state policing by Nigerians and other stakeholders. The governors of the Southwest earlier today emphasized on the immediate need for state police while reacting to the illegal operation carried out by the Nigerian Police as against the directive of Governor Sanwo-Olu in Magodo.
