The Nigerian Centre for Disease and Control revealed in a statement on Sunday the 26th of December, 2021, that not less than 21 people died of COVID-19 on Saturday 25th of December, 2021, Christmas day.
The update received from the NCDC In the morning of Sunday, the day after Christmas, shows that Nigeria’s Covid-19 numbers significantly increased on the day of Christmas. The records show that 1,305 new cases of Covid-19 were discovered on Saturday 25th of December this year.
It also shows that a large portion of those cases were found in Lagos State, the most populous city in Nigeria and West Africa with approximately 21 million inhabitants. About 705 new cases were discovered in Lagos State alone. The Lagos State tally on Christmas day exceeded the combined number of new cases in Oyo State and Ondo State, the second and third most affected states respectively, by a margin of 383, making Lagos State the most affected by a significantly large number.
The dreaded disease was also reported to have claimed the lives of about 21 people in Nigeria on Christmas day. The additional deaths have put Nigeria across the 3,000 death toll, the total number of recorded deaths has now risen to 3,014 in the country. The majority of the 21 death cases is reported to have come from Imo State and Kaduna, with Imo recording 16 deaths and 4 deaths being recorded in Kaduna.
The death toll on Christmas day is said to be the largest number recorded in the past two weeks.
The 1,305 new cases were reported to have emanated from 14 states across the country, and the NCDC relayed the numbers as follows:
Lagos – 705, Oyo – 234, Ondo – 88, Kaduna – 79, Rivers – 78, Ogun – 30, Anambra – 25, Kano – 24, Enugu – 12, Ekiti – 11, Jigawa – 6, Osun – 6, Plateau – 6, Zamfara – 1.
Since the first case of COVID-19 was recorded on the 27th of February, 2020, there have been 236,014 confirmed cases, of those cases 212,357 have been discharged and there have been 3,014 recorded deaths in Nigeria.
It was also reported that a number of presidential aides have test positive for the virus and have gone into isolation. The reports claim that Lai Mohammed, the minister of Information and Culture, has also tested positive for the virus. However, none of the affected parties is thought to be in critical condition, due to the fact that they have all been fully vaccinated.
