A fire which erupted in the late hours of night on Wednesday 23rd of December 2021 in Bauchi, has reportedly damaged several structures within the Muda Lawal market.

The fire which started late in the night, raged on until the early hours of the morning. Firefighters on the scene with the aid of some other individuals collaborated to put out the fire. By the time the fire was put out property worth millions had already been damage, several stores and shops in the section of the market which was engulfed in flames were seriously damaged.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the prevailing theory is that the fire originated from one of the stores which stocked raw food, and the fire was triggered by a spark of electricity.

Market officials who were contacted affirmed the outbreak, but were unable to give much detail because investigations into the fire, the cause and the amount lost in property damage, were still underway.

This is also not the first time that the Muda Lawal market has been gutted by fire. In April, 2020 a five year old boy who was resting in one of the affected shops was confirmed to have died in the fire outbreak, which also cause millions of naira in property damage. Multiple vehicles were also damaged in the outbreak, including 8 cars and 11 motorcycles. Some youths who held the firefighters partially responsible for the damage done, were reported to have thrown stones at the firefighter vehicles, stating that they had not arrived in time to extinguish the flames.
