The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the House. Reports confirmed that Obasa was impeached on Monday afternoon.

Obasa, who has led the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, was removed from office by lawmakers over allegations of abuse of office and gross misconduct. Representing the Agege Constituency 1, Obasa was first elected to office in 2007.

Following his impeachment, the lawmakers swore in Mojisola Miranda, his deputy and the lawmaker representing Apapa Constituency 1, as the new speaker. She becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has been asked to account for a budget of N44 billion over the last two years. This demand followed the compilation of a document detailing the allocation of funds and Obasa’s alleged failure to utilize the money as approved.

According to the document, the N44 billion allegedly mismanaged by Obasa was allocated for vehicles and capital projects over the two-year period. A significant portion of the budget—N30.19 billion—was earmarked in 2023 for vehicles, including official cars, utility buses, and backup vehicles. Another N13.33 billion was allocated for vehicles in 2024.
