The Federal Government has appealed to politicians and stakeholders to cease politicizing the recent tragic incidents of food stampedes in Abuja and Anambra State, which resulted in loss of lives.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, emphasized that these events are not connected to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s economic reforms.

Idris noted that similar incidents have occurred in the past, before the current administration, making any attempts to link these tragedies to the President’s reforms unfounded and disingenuous. He added that the government’s reforms aim to reposition the Nigerian economy for sustainable growth and uplift the lives of all Nigerians, particularly the vulnerable, without causing distress.

The Minister called for collective responsibility and unity among citizens to ensure a peaceful and joyful yuletide season, free from preventable tragedies. He acknowledged the good intentions of organizers in providing relief to vulnerable members of society but stressed the importance of complying with the Inspector General of Police’s directive on crowd control and security measures.

Idris expressed sympathy for the families and loved ones of the victims, emphasizing that the government’s thoughts and prayers are with them. Vice President Kashim Shettima also offered condolences, describing the incidents as a national tragedy.

The Federal Government also directed individuals and organizations planning similar events to collaborate with the police and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to prevent further distress and safeguard lives.
