In a breakthrough, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 636,600 bottles of codeine-based syrup worth N4.4 billion in street value at the Port Harcourt Port Complex, Onne, Rivers State. The seizure was made possible by credible intelligence gathered by NDLEA operatives, who tracked the shipments from India.

The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that the drugs were intercepted in three shipments on December 9, 11, and 13. The joint examination of four containers by NDLEA officers, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) operatives, and other security agencies led to the recovery of the illicit syrup.

This significant seizure is a testament to the NDLEA’s commitment to curbing the illicit drug trade in Nigeria. The agency’s Chairperson, Buba Marwa, commended the officers and men of the Onne Commands for their exceptional work in intercepting the shipments.

In addition to the seizure, the NDLEA has continued its War Against Drug Abuse sensitization activities across the country. The agency has delivered lectures in schools, worship centers, workplaces, and communities, aiming to reduce the dangers of illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

The NDLEA’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to combat the illicit drug trade in Nigeria. Similar seizures have been made in recent times, including the interception of hard drugs worth over N4.1 billion at the Tin Can Island Port.
