The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it requires approximately $19 million to effectively combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the country. This announcement was made by Fatai Oyediran, the National Coordinator for Neglected Tropical Diseases at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on Thursday.

Nigeria bears a significant burden of NTDs, contributing about 50% to the burden of NTDs in Africa and 25% globally. It’s estimated that over 165 million Nigerians require treatment for at least one NTD, with many more at risk.

Inadequate funding is a significant challenge in addressing NTDs in Nigeria. To combat this, the National Coordinator emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to mobilize resources and plan strategically to implement the NTDs master plan.

Additionally, there is a need for both federal and state governments to allocate sufficient budgets for NTDs. Currently, most states lack budgetary provisions for these diseases.

Some states, like Abia and Kwara, have made significant progress in combating NTDs. Abia State, for instance, has been certified to have broken the transmission of onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis.

According to NTD, combating NTDs in Nigeria requires a multi-faceted approach, involving government support, adequate funding, and collaborative efforts. With the right strategies and resources in place, it’s possible to control and eradicate NTDs in Nigeria.
