The National Population Commission (NPC) has debunked reports that its Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra, announced a date for the upcoming national population and housing census. According to the NPC, Kwarra was quoted out of context during a media interaction at the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development in Abuja.
The commission clarified that the Chairman merely expressed hope that President Bola Tinubu would issue a proclamation for the census date in the coming year. The NPC noted that the power to issue a proclamation on the date for the conduct of the census rests with the president.
The commission is currently in the preparatory stage for the upcoming census, and discussions regarding the timeline are ongoing. The NPC has engaged with the presidency to determine a new date, following the postponement of the census by the previous administration.
The NPC has urged the public to seek verified information from official NPC channels rather than relying on unsubstantiated claims. The commission called on the public and media to exercise caution and verify information before dissemination.
In a related development, the Senate Committee on National Identity and Population has called on President Tinubu to formally proclaim the conduct of the next Population and Housing Census and direct the release of funds necessary for its implementation.
