President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in France on Wednesday evening for a historic two-day state visit, marking the first official visit by a Nigerian leader to the country in over two decades. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Tinubu at the iconic Invalides Memorial Complex in Paris.
The visit aims to strengthen economic ties between France and Nigeria, with a focus on fostering partnerships across various sectors. Macron, who has been seeking to renew France’s relationship with Africa since his election in 2017, views the visit as an opportunity to reset ties after setbacks with former allies on the continent.
According to Macron’s office, the trip presents “an opportunity to deepen the already dynamic relationship between France and Nigeria.” Discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover critical areas such as finance, solid minerals, trade, investment, and communication.
Tinubu’s visit is considered a significant step in enhancing ties between France and English-speaking Africa. Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation, offers a promising market for French investment despite challenges such as insecurity and corruption.
The visit also reflects France’s efforts to re-establish its influence in Africa after experiencing a decline in recent years. With Nigeria seeking to expand cooperation in agriculture, security, education, health, youth engagement, innovation, and energy transition, the visit is anticipated to yield mutually beneficial outcomes for both nations.
