Kunle Afolayan

Kunle Afolayan is a renowned Nigerian filmmaker, producer and director who has made significant contributions to the Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood. He is the founder and CEO of Kunle Afolayan Productions Television (KAPTv) and Golden Effects Pictures.

Kunle was born on September 30, 1974, in Ebute Metta, Lagos State, Nigeria, into a notable entertainment family. Adeyemi Afolayan, his father, popularly known as Adelove, was a well-known Nigerian actor and filmmaker.  Adeola Afolayan, his mother, was also a theatrical practitioner. Growing up in such an atmosphere, it’s no surprise that Kunle developed an early interest in the arts.

Kunle received his primary education at the Nigerian Model Primary School, Lagos, before proceeding to the Federal Government College, Lagos, for his secondary education. He then studied Economics at the University of Lagos, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Despite pursuing a degree in Economics, Kunle’s true passion for filmmaking was evident throughout his academic years. In 2005, he received a diploma in digital filmmaking from the New York Film Academy

Kunle Afolayan used to be a banker who dabbled in acting before transitioning fully into the film industry. He didn’t break into the field until 2005, when he left his banking job to become a professional filmmaker. He began his career as a production assistant and then as an actor in the Nigerian film industry. He founded his production firm, Golden Effects Pictures, in July 2005 which is a fully integrated film production company that has two divisions: film content development and post-production, as well as equipment leasing. He has so far produced several successful films, including Irapada (Redemption), The Figurine – Araromire, Phone Swap, October 1, The C.E.O, Omugwo, ROTI, Mokalik, The Tribunal, and Citation, a film directed by Kunle Afolayan that featured a talented cast, including Temi Otedola and other foreign performers, was also released by Netflix in 2020. The movie was a huge hit and topped the box office for several months. 

In 2021, Kunle Afolayan signed a deal with the world’s leading streaming entertainment platform, Netflix, to direct and produce three movies. Kunle Afolayan also collaborated with Tunde Kelani on the production of Swallow, a story from Sefi Atta’s bookHe also directed A Naija Christmas and Ayinla, all of which brought in millions of dollars. His films frequently address societal concerns and showcase Nigeria’s cultural history. Kunle is noted for his meticulous attention to detail, high production values, and ability to produce visually beautiful films.

Kunle Afolayan’s career has been defined by a slew of honours and accomplishments that recognise his talent and services to the Nigerian film industry. Afolayan’s most recent movie,  Anikulapo, was the most nominated movie at the  African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2023 and won the categories for the Best Indigenous Language (Yoruba) and the Best Overall Movie of the Year.  

Aside from filmmaking, Kunle Afolayan is an advocate for the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry. He has taken part in projects to improve the quality of Nigerian films and encourage collaborations with international filmmakers. Afolayan has represented Nigeria at multiple film festivals and received numerous honours for his contributions to the film business.

Afolayan remains a notable character in Nigerian cinema. He is well-known for his love for classic and antique automobiles; he owns a 1982 Jaguar XJ6, a 1929 Mercedes Benz W10 Gazelle, a Peugeot 508, and a 1965 Thunderbird Ford.
