The Federal Government affirms to injecting 10,000,000 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders into circulation nationwide in order to increase access to the commodity and promote the use of cleaner energy.

Alhaji Musa Ibrahim, The Managing Director of the Nigeria LPG, disclosed this at a two-day sensitization workshop on Bauchi, on the 18th of January; tagged Engaging Bauchi State Towards Sustainable Socio-economic Growth through LPG adoption and expansion.

He Stated that, the cylinders would be distributed nationwide through registered marketers; he also mentioned that, they will establish micro sales and distribution centers for the cylinders.

He added that, the price of the safe cylinders is affordable as the LPG is able to improve economic activities of the end-users.

Dayo Adeshina, The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on LPG, urged indwellers of Bauchi State to embrace the use of the LPG in their households.

He stated that, the Federal Government is considering the possibility of increasing access to the commodity by reducing the high cost of the LPG to expand affordability.

He said the use of cooking gas would reduce instances of deforestation, desertification, and soil erosion which contributed seriously to environmental hazards.

In his remarks, Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy, Senator Baba Tela, said that his would support the programme to succeed.

He called on the national LPG office to develop a means through which gas for firing automobiles to reduce carbon emissions will be introduced.

He explained that many Nigerians are ignorant of the potentials of the LPG, emphasizing on the fact that, citizens need to be aware of the potentials of the product.

He added that, the state commissioner for natural resources, Nuruddeen Abdulhameed, said government would fully support the implementation of the project with the provision of a spacious plot of land and the political will to see to the successful take off of the programme.

He also called on the national LPG office to develop a means through which gas for firing automobiles to reduce carbon emissions will be introduced.

Federal government has commended the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited for suspending the exportation of cooking gas while approving 100 per cent domestic supply of the product.

NLNG noted that, the move is designated to increase LPG availability in Nigeria, diversify its use and support the federal governments Decade of Gas initiative.

The Minister of State for the Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor gave the commendation in a statement released by the Ministrys Director of Press, Saghir el Mohammed.

The Minister, commended that, the initiative is a bold one and it is a welcomed development and a step in the right direction that will not only bring down the price of the commodity but also bring relief to the forests and the ecosystems.

She recollect that, shortly after the hike in price of cooking gas in the country, millions of Nigerians could no longer afford the commodity and consequently resorted to firewood and charcoal as alternatives.

Ikeazor laments that, cutting the forests for wood and charcoal has been a major cause of deforestation and other climate change challenges.

She added that, the smokes from the wood and charcoal contribute to air pollution and other pollutants that produce greenhouse gases.

“NLNG should be commended for its sensitivity and responsiveness to the plight of Nigerians.

“For us in the environment sector, this singular decision will not only help in restoring our forests and in addressing some of our climate challenges, but also facilitate the attainment of our Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and other aspects of the Paris Agreement.

“We in the environment sector strongly support and believe that by making gas available and affordable, being the cleanest of the fossil fuels, Nigeria is now set towards cutting down on its carbon emissions drastically, thus play a prominent role during the current energy transition period.” The minister said.
