Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been awarded 1 billion naira in damages by a High Court in Umuahia, against the Federal Government of Nigeria, for violation of his fundamental human rights.

On Wednesday 19th January, 2022, in a judgment delivered by Justice Benson Anya, the court pronounced as illegal the invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s home in Afarachukwu, Umuahia by the military on September 10, 2017. This was the action that necessitated him to flee the country.

The court also ordered that an apology be rendered by the Federal Government and the Army to Nnamdi Kanu for the infringement of his Fundamental Rights.

The presiding judge, Justice Anya, also directed the Federal Government to seek a political solution in the resolution of the Nnamdi Kanu situation.
