Some unknown gunmen have abducted three Chinese workers while also killing two locals staffs in at a hydropower dam project in Zungeru in the Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State.

This was confirmed in a statement made available by the  police spokesperson in Niger state, Wasiu Abiodun, on Thursday.

According to him, workers on the hydro-power dam project comprises of some Chinese expatriate and other local workers who were all victims of the attack while working on a transmission line tower along Gussase village.

He confirmed that three among the Chinese expatriates were abducted while two local workers who were shot later died in the hospital.

The Police spokesperson further said that the tactical police team attached to the facility engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel which lasted for hours. As a result of this, four of the Chinese expatriates were resucued but one of them and two local staffs unfortunately sustained bullet injury.

Over the past few years, expatriates who have been working on multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects have been a target for gunmen and kidnappers in Nigeria, as the country continue to struggle with security challenges.

The attackers mostly demand for heavy ransom before their captives are released to their families.
