The President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmed Lawan has assured Nigerians that the Electoral Act amendment Bill and review of 1999 constitution will top the National Assembly’s agenda in the coming year.
Lawan disclosed this on Friday in his New Year message to Nigerians, assuring Nigerians that the lawamakers would find a wayforward on the Electoral Bill reject by President Buhari.
Recall that Buhari had withheld his assent to the electoral act bill citing the mandatory direct primary clause as major reason.
The Senate President, however, said the lawmakers are determined to deliver an Electoral Act that stands the test of time in safeguarding democracy and the electoral process in the country.
He further said they will receive the report of the committee on the reveiw of the 1999 constitution when the lawmakers reconvene, assuring that the outcome of the exercise will enhance unity and stability in the country and coexistence among Nigerians.
Lawan also encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope in the nation and its democratic institution, saying Nigeria would surmount its current challenges.
He concluded that the National Assembly with no be distracted from carrying out good legislative functions, promising that more bills will be passed.
