The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board stated on Monday 20th of December, 2021 that prospective candidates, who intend to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations in the year 2022, are mandated to obtain their National Identity Numbers prior to their registration.
There have been multiple complaints regarding the addition of the National Identification Number (NIN), as one of the requirements for the UTME process. Parents, guardians and candidates alike have voiced their concerns over the new inclusion. The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board was forced to postpone the 2021 registrations, in order to allow candidates sufficient time for candidates to register with their National Identification Numbers.
The Senate reportedly contacted Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of the board, and also the National Identity Management Commission, in an attempt to have the policy reviewed. The board however insists that the NIN for each candidate would be required to complete the registration process.
The board also stated that it is currently in the process of thorough training, to ensure that provisions are on ground to make for a smooth and peaceful process, as soon as the date is published, and that the sale of application forms for the 2022 UTME registration would begin soon, as well as the sale for the Direct Entry forms.
“For those who may want to obtain any of the two application documents, they are advised to get their NIN and also familiarize themselves with the board’s Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System.
“It will give them an idea of the course requirements and the syllabus they are expected to cover for the examination.” Said the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
The board, by the release of this information, intends to make sure that candidates are well prepared for the entire process. The provision of all the information they deem pertinent is one of the ways by which they aim to achieve this.
JAMB also informed the public that IBASS can be found on the website and is also available for download on Google Playstore and similar applications. It was also stated that candidates are to send their NIN to 55019 in order to create a registration profile.
The body assured the public that sufficient action is being taken to strengthen the administrative procedure, in order to ensure that candidates, staff and JAMB centres involved in any form of malpractice would be prevented, and those found out would be adequately prosecuted.
