In view of government’s directive on compulsory synchronization of SIM Cards with NIN, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to remove with immediate effect the USSD N20 charges for NIN service across all networks. The fee was originally imposed on subscribers for NIN retrieval requests.

Umar Garba Danbatta, The Executive Vice Chairman, NCC, and Aliyu Abubakar Aziz, the Director General of NIMC informed Dr. Pantami in a letter conveying the implementation of the directive. He stated that they had engaged the relevant authorities, and negotiated a waiver with Mobile Network Operators. This waiver which allows all Nigerians, subscribers as well as applicants access the service using the recognized USSD code for their NIN retrieval with no charge. Although this will be for the duration of the NIN/SIM Card integration exercise, the directive is designed to make the process of retrieval easier and affordable for the masses.

The Communications minister acknowledged the efforts of all stakeholders and encouraged them to show more altruism for national interest.
