Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has congratulated Joe Biden on his election as US President-elect. This is coming after the electoral college last Monday confirmed Biden as the winner of the presidential polls. Putin had initially refused to acknowledge Biden as the winner of the election. While other world leaders congratulated the US President-elect, Putin held back.

Sources reveal that the Russian president, who has close ties with Donald Trump and was rumored to have facilitated the latter’s victory in 2016, held back to ascertain the outcome of the elections by the electoral college. This is especially when Trump raised allegations of rigging in the elections.

Following the confirmation by the electoral college, formalizing Biden’s win in the November 3 election, Putin said he “wished the president-elect every success”. He noted that he was “ready for interaction”.

In a telegram published by Russian State media and sent to Biden, Putin “expressed confidence that Russia and the U.S, who bear special responsibility for global security and stability, can facilitate resolution of many problems and challenges faced by the world now despite disagreements.”

Incumbent President, Donald Trump, and many of his fellow Republican Party members, have still refused to concede to the Democratic Party.
