The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), an upstream subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has revealed that an explosion took place at a production facility in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 40.

It was gathered that the explosion involving NNPC partners Elcrest Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited took place as the company was working on production evacuation at the Gbetiokun Early Production facility.

Dr. Kennie Obateru, the corporation’s Group General Manager, disclosed in a statement that there were no casualties and no one sustained injuries. There was also no significant spill in the incident.

Dr. Obateru, nonetheless, revealed the impact the explosion has on oil production. He said there was ‘significant damage to the marine storage vessel, MT Harcourt, which will impact production by about 10,000 barrels of oil per day.’

He further added that ‘NNPC has since commenced an investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident with a view to averting future occurrence.’
