No Holding Back on the Implementation of Teachers’ New Salary Structure-TRCN Tells State Governments

Prof. Segun Ajiboye, the Registrar of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), has implored state governments to work in line with the review of teachers’ welfare packages declared by the Federal Government. Prof. Ajiboye stated this while addressing pressmen on the benefits of the new salary structure and other additional welfare packages for teachers.

Prof. Ajiboye said that the new salary scale and other welfare packages, highlighted by President Buhari on October 5 to celebrate teachers, were already undergoing implementation process by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of Head of Service of the Federation.

The TRCN Registrar also stated that after the full implementation of the new salary structure at both levels; Federal and State, teaching as a profession would be a center of attraction to the best brains in the country, while experienced hands would still be retained.

He expressed that the Buhari’s government had taken up the welfare of teachers which had long been neglected in order to lay a solid premise upon which a child’s education is built, and to also boost the morale of teachers.

He stated that, ‘The president’s approval cuts across new salary structure for teachers, their retirement age, teaching practice allowances for both lecturers and pre-school teachers, bursary awards for education students and rural housing scheme for teachers among others.

‘Presently, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of Head of Service of the Federation are working out modalities for the implementation of the presidential approvals.’

He further added that, ‘While this is going on, it is incumbent on the states to be carried along for its smooth implementation at that level given the fact that education is on the concurrent legislative list.
