There was an attempted jailbreak at the Ikoyi Correctional Center. Policemen and soldiers have arrived the scene to curb the situation.
Eyewitnesses revealed that smokes were emanating from parts of the prison centers while inmates made attempts to escape.
There was an immediate notification of the police and military authorities for backup.
An eyewitness stated that ‘soldiers and policemen already arrived the correctional center.’
‘Prisoners were also seen throwing stones.’
‘The prison officials gathered at the entrance of the prison which forced some of the inmates to retreat.’
‘There were also gunshots heard from the prison.’
Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, however, the policemen at the scene of the incidence would take charge of the situation.
‘We don’t know the cause of the fire but we are there, on ground. We have mobilised to the place. We will give details later,’ he said.
‘Security operatives have been assigned over Awolowo road and Ribadu and they are currently guarding the environment.’
Tokunbo Ogunbanjo, another eyewitness revealed that ‘there was no escape from the prison.’
