Colonel D. C. Bako, a Nigerian Army Commander of 25 Task Force Brigade of Operation Lafiya Dole, was reported to have been killed by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

The Senior Military Officer lost his life in an ambush by the insurgents while on patrol along the dreaded Dambosa-Sambogari axis in the Southern part of Borno. The ambush later resulted into an intermittent gun battle, where he was hit. He later died at a hospital in Maiduguri.

Col. Ado Isa, spokesman of the 7 Division Nigerian Army, confirmed the passing away of the Colonel. He relayed the consolation of Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, to the deceased family.

‘The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen TY Buratai, on behalf of himself, the gallant troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and indeed well-meaning Nigerians, hereby express his heartfelt condolences to his esteemed family,’ the statement reads.

‘We are most grateful for his contributions and sacrifices to the motherland. May God grant eternal rest to the gentle soul of Col D. C. Bako and the souls of all Nigerian Army Officers and soldiers who paid the supreme prize in the defense of our father land.’

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, in his statement, delivered by Malam Isa Gusau, his spokesman says that, the unrelenting sacrifice of Col. Bako and those who pay the costly price in the fight against insurgency will not be worthless.

The governor proceeded by saying ‘Bako was a true soldier who inspired his troops and led them to the front lines with exceptional courage that was clearly out of pure patriotism. He fought very hard and very well.’ He added that the deceased ‘defeated many enemies of peace and protected many sons and daughters of Borno state to the extent he gave his life defending the people of Borno.’

‘By the grace of God, the supreme sacrifices made by Col. Bako and many other heroes like him in the armed forces and volunteers shall not be in vain,’ the governor’s statement also read.
